Landfill Gas Monitoring

A quarterly gas monitoring program has been in effect at the Williamson County Landfill since Waste Management began operating it. Twenty-two gas probes are placed around the perimeter of the landfill to detect the potential presence of landfill gas migration.

Gas Collection and Extraction

In 2006, Waste Management voluntarily installed a gas collection and extraction system at the Williamson County Landfill designed to achieve the following:

  •  Reduce the potential for off-site landfill gas migration
  •  Minimize passive landfill gas emissions
  •  Control potential landfill odors

Waste Management installed gas extraction wells into deposited wastes to collect landfill gases generated by decomposing waste. The gases are removed via a central, high-temperature flare, which has no adverse impact on public health or safety.
