The Williamson
County Landfill located off of Highway 1660 was permitted
by the TCEQ in December 1981. The County has contracted
with Waste Management of Texas since the mid-1980s to operate
the facility.
The facility consists of 202 permitted acres of land and
currently accepts, on average, 600 tons of municipal solid
waste a day. The footprint is permitted for 158 acres, leaving
44 acres designated as buffer area.
In the mid-1990s, Williamson County purchased additional acreage around the existing landfill for the express purpose of expanding the landfill to meet the waste needs of the growing population. The proposed expansion includes an additional landfill footprint of 342 acres, which will also have significant buffer.
The landfill is located in a predominantly rural area. Williamson County Commissioners currently have plans to re-route FM 1660 to the east of the City of Hutto and to build Chandler Road along the south boundary of the landfill, which will help divert traffic away from existing subdivisions.
Since 1993, more than $8 million has been spent on the following environmental controls and aesthetic improvements:
- Composite liners in all active disposal areas
- Clay capping of inactive areas
- Installation of 8 groundwater monitoring wells
- Installation of 22 perimeter gas monitoring probes
- Installation of mud removal system
- Installation of onsite weather monitoring station
- Installation of litter control fences
- Installation of storm water controls
- Construction of computerized weigh station
- Construction of new interior roads
